Medieval period

Genre
The medieval period or the Middle Ages was a period of time on Europe and the neighbouring regions of West Asia and Northern Africa between ancient history and the Renaissance. Several dates between the 5th and the 15th centuries has been proposed as the beginning and ending of this period, with differences between regions. The most common dates are the fall of Rome in 476 A.D. and the fall of Constantinople in 1453 A.D. This period of time is characterised by the expansion of Christianism and Islam, the rise of several kingdoms and empires and the numerous wars between them like the Hundred Years' War, the viking invasions, or the crusades in the Middle East, among many other events.

A typical element of video games of this period are the orders of chivalry and knighthood, swordfights and medieval weaponry, as well as a setting of castles and fortified cities. Games with medieval setting cover this period from a general stance in Crusader Kings II to more specific events like Joan of Arc and William Wallace campaigns in Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, the crusades in Assassin's Creed, the viking invasion of Britain in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and the history of the Kingdom of Bohemia in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Medieval elements have also been an influence on the development of several fantasy settings.
