In 2011, military commander Khaled Al-Asad leads a coup d'état in an oil-rich Middle Eastern country, executing their leader on live television. What results is a hunt for Al-Asad led by the United States Marine Corps and British Special Air Service.
Out of the serious and patriotic military shooters out there Call of Duty 4 is by far the best one. Which may not seem much considering the competition, but it really is an amazing game that i spent way too many hours on.
Nowadays its easy to think back to its campaign and think its generic bombastic hollywood action, but the game marked a huge turning point for shooters. The setpieces and explosive moments created in this game manage to be memorable even after a decade of Call of duty sequels as well as other franchises that tried to ape the same concept. Its diverse, and it definitly knew how to handle the more intense segments with more slow down sections. There is definitly an anti war theme throughout the whole game, even if tries to sell itself for being patriotic. That said, the campaign still has its flaws, like the boring mission intro filled with needless militaristic language (reminds me of tom clancy's game, and i hate the plot in those), and there are way too many doors that can only be opened by NPCs. Its a game that plays like a rollercoaster, meaning that there is really very little interaction you can have except follow the straight path and shoot down enemies. Because of the infinite enemy waves and hitscan weapons, the game becomes infuriatingly hard in veteran difficulty.
But the campaign is really a basic intro for the meat of the game, which is the competitive multiplayer. Nowadays i have mixed feelings about the design of this series, but i can say that i loved the time i spent with it at the time and how easy it is to new players. There is no need for pinpoint accuracy and fast reflexes when everyone is conditioned to use aim on signts to hit anything after 5 meters. The reduced POV means that most kills will actually happen by enemies that you didnt see, which can be annoying but also an incentive to move fast and know the maps. The time to kill is short, the weapons have very little recoil and are extremely easy to use. At the same time, the killstreaks make someone who is doing well completly destroy the opposition. This combined with the regenerative health and ample ammo supplies means that going on very long killstreaks is a common occourrance in this game. While it is undoubtedly satisfying to be in that position, this unfortunalty ends up being one of those games that is only satisfying if you are doing well.
Last time i checked, it was literally impossible to play on servers do the huge amount of hackers, but the remaster will change that. This game is probably the equivalent of getting the best hamburger in mcdonalds. It still fast food, but sometimes its just what you are aching for.

To me, the four best online shooters that defined my childhood were MW, MW2, BF3, and BF4. There was some other good ones in there but those four were the masterpieces of my days. MW2 was always to BF4 what MW was to BF3. MW and BF3 were just simpler, more rigid, more clear ways to have fun. It was always easy just to play those ones and have fun simply because of the maps, guns, classes, perks, killstreaks/vehicles, etc. were so easy to use and understand. MW was just easy to have fun unlike every other shooter that required some cultural conditioning. To this day, this game might have been the first ever masterpiece of an online shooter (I never played Halo sorry, grew up on Playstation).

Never played any of the COD's much, growing up. They were just kind of in the background. And while I'm playing through them now, they seem good, but something's missing... damnit, where did all the dorito bags and mountain dew cans go?

One of the greatest shooters ever released and the beginning of online multiplayer gaming that turned COD into a world-beater (even if commoner gamers of the lower classes don't like it because these games aren't aRtIsTiC enough for them (in other words, more about watching movie narrative than actual gaming mechanics)).
I had the gold cross, and all gold guns and I was damn fucking good at this game. They've levelled the playing field every iteration since. I stopped playing somewhere in the 10's around Advanced Warfare but got back in for Vanguard.
A great franchise which has sort of fallen on hard times now, but nobody can deny this installment, it was the first great masterpiece modern warfare gamer shooter. Everyone played some of this, great fun.

+ A nice and simple shooter. + Iconic, albeit somewhat simple story.
Not much else to say about its campaign. Not extremely intriguing or memorable.
Completed.

I loved this campaign, from the time this game was released, and even today it's crazy good and influential, I didn't like the ending too much, but all in all, this was great, I played this before it's my third or fourth playthrough but I still love it and kinda forgot what made it so great, missions like ''all chilled up'' are just art.
The Story isn't the greatest and Mw2 did a better job than this, but it was still great.
I can't recommend anyone playing this on Veteran or Hardened, I did play this on Veteran about 3years ago, and it's super unfair and unfun and just has a lot of RNG, Hardened isn't better, so I played this one Regular, and had a blast. I cant remember if this had infinite enemy spawn like WaW, but it's still as bad as WaW, maybe a bit easier.
The multiplayer sadly is dead on Xbox, and I can't find any game, sad, as I played the multiplayer and it was great.
A great campaign, and Multiplayer but dead. say you buy this for 30€, which I do not recommend, get it cheap on eBay, if it's still cheap there, or wait for a sale. Weapon play is good and feels smooth.

playing this as someone who's used to a lot more PC shooters felt very weird. the controls felt very stiff, the visual effects for getting hit are some of the most jarring and distracting I've ever seen, and I was shocked at just how many times I kept dying again and again on Normal difficulty.
I feel like I'm missing something here, how did people play this as their first FPS on consoles where it's even more annoying to aim
I’ve always been a bit disappointed with the glitchwave scores for Golden Age COD games. Sure it might be a bit of a normie take but MW2 is genuinely the gold standard of multiplayer gaming that fits this niche for me that not many other pieces of media can offer and honestly WAW, BO2, and cod 4 aren’t that far behind.
It's no longer really relevant or at least not as prominent as it used to be. And when it was relevant, it hardly had a presence in my life So, personally, I just ignore the games altogether.
the entire call of duty series is nothing but mindless propaganda sludge. lowest common denominator fps-gaming to appeal to anyone dumb enough to think joining the military is a good idea, and then yell in their faces "JOIN THE MILITARY PLEASE" while they play the game. the gameplay mechanics are sometimes alright, and I enjoy the modern warfare trilogy storyline (barring the often racist, xenophobic, and warmongering undertones of the story), but its impossible to play these games without feeling like you're just playing an interactable commercial for the US marines
Really hate when people say this about every military game from this era. People just think its cool as fuck (because it is), its really not that deep I promise.
I've played on the PC servers for a few hours and enjoyed it but I won't comment any further on the multiplayer. As for the campaign...
Oh. My. Goodness. There were so many tangos everywhere gunning me down instantly. The game was at it's most nightmarish at act 2 which is where I almost gave up and uninstalled the game. I'm too used to Dark Souls where I can memorize my way through everything but there's nothing here to memorize. It's just a slow, painful crawl to victory. If this painful campaign was IW's way to promote their anti-war message, then they've succeeded.

I was playing on Hardened.
