Travis Touchdown and his companions step up to the plate to stop an alien army led by the psychotic egomaniac FU. Hellbent on conquering Earth, FU enlists the help of one of Travis' old enemies, Damon Ricotello, and wraps his quest for domination under the guise of superheroism.
For context, my experience with the No More Heroes franchise is a bit wonky, I've only played NMH2 a lot of years ago before playing NMH3, so it's a bit hard for me to compare games. This is a franchise that I absolutely love in concept and execution to some degree, it's very unique and chaotic, quite impossible to not understand why it gathered so many fans along the years. There's a dark humour mixed with a bunch of geek references that is hard to find anywhere else because it's so niche and absurdist.
This fourth interation of the series is pretty much more of the same, it's a hack-n-slash with usual for the genre, there's a crazy random plot going on and there's lots of gore. I'm absolutely sure that if you're into the series, you'll have at least a fun time with NMH3, the fighting is very satisfying.
I don't quite remember how NMH2 played aside from the boss battles, but NMH3 has an open world approach which is fine, riding your motorbike is fun, the world building is nothing particular special though. I thought the many minigames, which are mandatory to do so you can make enough money to fight the bosses, are quite shallow and repetitive. The boss fights are, obviously, the highlights, I really enjoyed the different approaches, parodies and designs, they definitely do not feel the same, I really wish I felt like this about the game as a whole.
It's by no means a bad game, but I assume I would've liked it better if it was more linear like I remember NMH2 was. I couldn't really get into the vibe of the "plot" and the characters because the segments were separated by multiple random missions. This open world approach makes possible the addition of collectibles, side missions and whatsover, it adds some replayability so it's not bad, I just don't particulary found anything interesting enough to make me come back for it.

Worst one of the bunch. The subtler grey themes of the first two are replaced by boring familialism and references. Technically features a worse open world than the first, and a less complex combat system than the first/second.
Not a bad game by any means, it just pales by comparison.
I honestly really do sense a burnout from the development team. Like what better way to admit it without saying it than sacrificing the established world space for something bigger. I miss when sequels weren't about bigger = better and instead refined what already worked.
I love how impenetrable this game gets for any one trying to analyze what it’s even trying to go for with it’s themes. It’s a mess that doesn’t necessarily stay loyal to being a message but I do think this is Grasshopper’s honest hand throwing to let out that this game and franchise is bull shit experimental enjoyment inspired by their love for video games and other media. It’s just the epitome of being a nerdy ass fanatic of many things and that’s why I love this game despite its flaws and confusing direction.
