You have to know that an arcade game's got problems when you and your best friend spend more time complaining about the car not doing what it's told than actually trying to beat each other. No game that puts you in opposition in such a basic point-scoring way should leave two kids furiously agreeing with each other for its entire length. It was the jerky steering that did it more than anything - the kind of subtlety you naturally want to go for just didn't seem capable on the technology, making approaching corners tricky and taking them frustrating. I was actually fairly good at it, and usually got near the top of the leaderboard (which reset every week at our arcade) whenever I played, but it didn't feel like I was beating other people, it felt like I was beating the game itself, defying its own internal logic somehow. You can only steer straight into a wall after only moving the wheel an inch to the side so many times before you feel like the game doesn't want you to do well, you know?
Maybe I'm unlucky and the cabinet was just pretty old and beat up by the time we got around to playing it, I guess, but I can't get away from my abiding memory of this game being everybody I knew agreeing that it was the worst game in the whole arcade by some distance, and only playing it for a laugh when the other machines were all occupied.

thanks to the extra chips inside the cart to make the 3-d work on the genesis that version of the game cost 100 dollars when it came out, or 210 dollars adjusted for inflation. All that money for 1 car, 3 tracks and a framerate the hovers around 12 frames per second.
I'd love to play the original arcade version sometime, but the Sega ages version is a joy to play, you don't need much content when the driving itself is so satisfying.
