Adding a company

Before submitting a new company, please do a search in the database to make sure it doesn't already exist. Companies that have changed their name over the course of their existence should only have a single company profile, the previous names can be added as AKAs. Companies formed as results from mergers, such as Square Enix (merging between Square and Enix) and Spike Chunsoft (merging between Spike and Chunsoft) should have their own entries, separated from the individual companies.

Note: Development teams, divisions and departments within companies should not have their own separated entries as subsidiaries unless they are explicitly mentioned in the credits and/or packaging of the game, presented with a clear distinction from the main company they are part of. It's common for certain online sources to specify teams and divisions which took part in the development of a game (e.g. Nintendo R&D and EAD groups, Team Ico, specific Sega, Capcom and Square Enix production teams), however such information should be sourced from the games credits and/or packaging instead. If the teams and divisions are mentioned in the game following the previously stated conditions then they are eligible to be entered in the database as subsidiaries under their main company (e.g. Nintendo Software Technology, Sonic Team, P Studio). Games which their teams or divisions are not eligible to be entered in the database should be attributed to the main company entry instead.

There are cases in which companies' development teams, divisions or departments were initially not being properly credited in the games they have participated on (verified by other sources), and started being credited distinctly from its main company in later games. If such teams/divisions/departments eventually gain the status to be entered on Glitchwave as subsidiary companies, it is allowed to apply their credits retroactively (crediting the added subsidiary instead of the parent company), even if they are not mentioned in the in-game credits or packaging but verified through other sources like official websites, statements, interviews, articles, etc.

Company information

Name

Enter the company's current name here. It is preferable to use the name of the company as it is displayed in their logos and presented in credits, so most Japanese companies would have their respective transliterations as main name (Enix instead of エニックス, Chunsoft instead of チュンソフト, Nintendo instead of 任天堂, etc.). The names in their original writing should be added in the alternate names field instead. Full corporate names, such as "Blizzard Entertainment, Inc." should be entered in the alternate name field as well. In this case, only "Blizzard Entertainment" would be entered here. Company names should follow the site-wide Capitalization standards (though exceptions for artistic intent can be made if the non-standard spelling of a name is clearly done deliberately).

If a company has changed its name, the new name should be entered in this field and the previous one should be moved to the alternate names field. For exceptional cases in which a company changed its name after leaving the video game market, the company name at the time of their latest published/developed game should be maintained in this field, with the recent name being added to the alternate name field (e.g. Vic Tokai).

After entering the name, please select the first word under which the company name should be sorted. Do not sort the name under articles such as "A", "The", "Das" or "Le" and similar.

Name language

Name language refers to the locale/language of the company's name. If you are unsure what to enter here, just default it to "English".

Short name

This field is optional but can be used to provide a more concise version of the company name. For example, the short name for "Blizzard Entertainment" is "Blizzard". In most cases the short name is just the main company name with generic elements like "Studio", "Games", "Entertainment", "Software", etc. removed from the end.

If there is no logical way to abbreviate the company name, leave this field empty.

Location

Enter the current location of this company here. For the region, use the regions from the Administrative divisions page (same as the Music database). The country field is the most important piece of information here.

If a company is spread out over multiple locations/offices, just enter the current location of the head office.

Date active

Enter the range of dates when company was founded and closed down, if applicable. If the company is still active, use "-present" after the founded date. Only enter the closed down date if the company is currently defunct. If the company is defunct but the closed down date is unknown, it is acceptable to put the year of their last game released. If the company re-opened at some point then the previous closed down date should be removed. It's not necessary to specify exact dates here. Just the year will do if that's all that is known.

Founded by

This field is optional, but if the founders of the company are games people that exist in the database you can list them here.

Parent companies

If this company is a subsidiary of one or more other companies you can list those companies here. For now only list the current parent companies. If the company changed the parent or became independent, then the previous parent shortcut should be removed.

History

See Biographies / Descriptions.

Websites

Use the company's official website, when possible. Fan sites are not acceptable. WWW addresses should be listed using the http:// prefix, so they will be clickable. Along with the official website for a company, the following types of links may also be included:

Official Facebook
Official Twitter

Sometimes the official website will be hosted on a blogspot or tumblr (or other relevant sites), these are fine to add if it's the only official site they have. These should be limited to only 1.

Note - otherwise you shouldn't place any external links in the profile, except in the "Sources Cited" section, as references.

Alternate names

This field can be used to provide name translations and alternative names for the company. Full corporate names (company full names including "Inc.", "Kabushiki-gaisha", "Ltd.", "Co, Ltd.", "S.A.", etc.) should be entered here instead, not in the main name field. In cases the company was renamed at some point, you should enter its past names here. You also have the option to specify the time period the company's alternate names were applicable:
  • If the alternate name was adopted in a period between years, you should enter the first year in the left field and the last year in the right field.

  • If the name was adopted in a single year, enter that year in both fields.

  • If the alternate name is still being used, enter the year it was adopted in the left field and select "present" in the right field

  • In case one or both years are unknown, select "unknown" in the appropriate fields

Please note that the company's current name should not be replicated in this field just for the addition of its time period. That will be already implied through the time period of the past names.

In the case of name localization, use translation anyway even if the franchise name is not a direct translation. The primary localized name should be at the top of the AKA list.
