Adding a franchise

Before submitting a new franchise, please do a search in the database to make sure it doesn't already exist, some franchises may have different names/AKAs.

A franchise must have at least two applicable game entries present in the database to be eligible for entry. Expansion and collection entries do not count. Also, remember that only official games in the database should be added under franchises, so fan-games, ROM hacks, demos, official non-video games not eligible to be entered in Glitchwave, etc. are not considered for the franchise eligibility. It is also not preferable to submit a franchise entry for a original game and its remake, unless there is a strong reason which should be presented in the submission entry.

Please confirm that the franchise you are adding is officially endorsed and accepted by its creators/owners and other publications as a series or container under which games can be grouped before submitting it to the site. Below are some instances of different types of franchises and how to proceed with them.

Sub-franchises

Sub-franchises entries are for other established within their original series, such as Metal Gear Solid and Dragon Ball Z. These should be always purposefully established by their owners as something related yet unique within the parent franchise. Remember that every game from a sub-franchise is also part of the parent franchise. If there is something not compatible regarding that, then the relation between the sub and parent franchises should be revised, such as turning the sub-franchise in a stand alone franchise. Cases like these are common as the franchise develops itself, so all parent-child relation between franchises are subject to change with time.

Since parent franchises inherit the games from their sub-franchises, there could be possible cases in which there are less games than the minimum required directly added under a parent franchise. Regardless, sub-franchises games are still accounted for the eligibility requirements of a parent franchise.

There are certain sub-series which get several numbered entries within them, such as Street Fighter II and Final Fantasy XIII. Franchise entries for these should not be submitted, as there is no real need to segment the franchise tree to that degree.

Sequels and prequels

Many games are considered sequels or prequels of a original game by the developers/publishers, however that does not automatically mean the game and its sequels should be grouped as a franchise. There should be an official statement for those entries as being part of a series. For entries which do not have numbered titles or share a common title, the intent to establish a series is not clear enough by checking the title of each entry alone, so additional sources are needed. Community and fan based sources should be avoided when submitting franchises, as those do not represent the real intention of the creators and owners (unless there is proof they support the community's interpretation).

Conceptual series

Usually certain series are established by their creators/owners even though the games do not seem to share things in common at first instance. Their inclusion as franchise entries could be justified, since they are official, however note that the submission for these should be elaborated so it makes sense to include them as a franchise entry in the database.

Franchises for licensed media, associations and derivative works

Each franchise entry should refer to the media owned by someone or an entity, and shouldn't be mixed up by any means. The Sponge Bob franchise entry will contain all the Sponge Bob games, films and soundtrack releases. Associations and committes usually license their name so companies can develop video games and films based on them, such as FIFA and Formula 1. The licensed media carrying the name of those associations and entities would be contained in the same franchise entry. For example, the Disney's Aladdin games for SNES and Genesis, despite being developed and published by different companies, should be under the same Disney's Aladdin franchise because they are licensed games.

Franchises with the same name

Certain series from different owners/creators end up having the same names, despite being completely unrelated. Each series under this situation should have its own franchise entry. A description would help users to identify what a specific franchise entry is related to.

Franchise information

Name

Franchise names should follow the site-wide Capitalization standards (though exceptions for artistic intent can be made if the non-standard spelling of a name is clearly done deliberately).

After entering the name, select the first word or character under which the name should be sorted. Articles such as "A", "The", "Das" or "Le" and similar acting as prefixes should not be selected for sorting.

The original name (usually in the original language) should be entered as the main name of the franchise. In case of any doubt, refer to developer and publisher's sources. Alternative names, localizations and translations can be added in the AKAs section.

Name locale

Name locale refers to the locale/language of the franchise's name. If you are unsure what to enter here, just default it to "English".

History

See Biographies / Descriptions.

Parent franchises

It's possible for franchises to be divided into sub-franchises. If this franchise is part of a broader franchise you can link those here using [FranchiseXXX] shortcuts.

Example: Metal Gear is the parent franchise for Metal Gear Solid.

Some sub-franchises can have more than one parent franchise. For those cases, enter all applicable [FranchiseXXX] shortcuts in this field.

Example: Lego Star Wars sub-franchise is part of both Lego and Star Wars franchises.

AKAs

This field can be used to provide name translations, and alternative names for the franchise.

In the case of name localization, use translation anyway even if the franchise name is not a direct translation. The primary localized name should be at the top of the AKA list.
