Adding a character

Before submitting a new character, please do a search in the database to make sure it doesn't already exist, some characters may have many different names/AKAs.

In general any character that makes a prominent appearance in at least one game or film can be submitted to the database. Note that the character you are adding must be identified as a character, not as an entity (The Sims, Metroid's Space Pirates), race (Goombas, Protoss) nor generic avatar (GTA Online character). A specific name/title which indentifies the specific and unique character is needed. If you can't identify a character specifically regarding its personal bio, name and attributes, then it is probably not allowed to be entered in the database. In cases where it is not clear enough if the character could be accepted, the submitter is responsible for justifying the importance of inclusion of the character in the database.

There are some special cases of legit characters being attributed as species/races in later games (Toad, Yoshi, Birdo). Such characters are relevant enough and are eligible to be entered in the database. Characters that appear as a kind of symbolic figure, but consistent with each game iteration, should be filled in a single entry (e.g. Link, Zelda, Final Fantasy's Cid).

Design variations of existing characters should be added as AKAs under the original character entry. Images of those variations are allowed to be uploaded to the character's gallery. If the variation is relevant enough in the games they appear, the shortcut ([CharacterXXX]) can be modified to reflect the actual designation of the character. Character variations that eventually gain recognition and are distinct enough from their original character could have separated profiles. Primarily, as a rule of thumb, both the variation and the original character must be clearly presented as distinct entities in at least one game. Once that condition is verified, and provided the variation's game library, bio and legacy are interesting, extensive and informative enough for their profile to stand on its own in the database, then it can be submitted for approval.

Character information

Name

Character names should follow the site-wide Capitalization standards (though exceptions for artistic intent can be made if the non-standard spelling of a name is clearly done deliberately). After entering the title, select the first word or letter under which the name should be sorted. Character names sorting follow the same rules applied to artists. Names containing titles (Dr., Mr., etc.) should be sorted by its title, and Japanese writing names should be sorted by the first character, with the localized names being sorted under the surname if applicable. Please see Alphabetization for more info.

The original name (usually in the original language) should be entered as the main name of the character, as it appears in the original game release. Alternative names, localizations and translations can be added in the AKAs section.

Name locale

Name locale refers to the locale/language of the character's name. If you are unsure what to enter here, just default it to "English".

Created by

You can use [ArtistXXX] shortcuts here to link the character to the people who created it. Multiple people can be entered here if necessary (many comic book characters are joint creations of a writer and an artist, for instance). Note that only people who originally conceived the character should be listed here, even if other writers/artists may have subsequently written for- or changed the character significantly.

This field is optional, if a character has no clearly identifiable creator it's fine to just leave it empty.

Created date

For the created date it's unlikely that in many cases an exact date will be known, the year is the most important part. Set the year to the earliest appearance of this character, which can be in a game or film, but can also be other media such as books or comics.

Biography

See Biographies / Descriptions.

This section should be used for both the fictional bio of the character (character's profile as it appears in the games) and the bio regarding its creation and concept (how the character was conceived, creation proccess, etc.). Each one of the two types of bio should separated in their own paragraphs/sections, not mixed. For consistency, the fictional bio should precede the creation and concept bio in the text formatting. It is not necessary to add both types of bio for every character.

AKAs

This field can be used to provide name translations, and alternative names for the character.

In the case of name localization, use translation anyway even if the character name is not a direct translation. The primary localized name should be at the top of the AKA list.
